![]() ![]() ![]() This prevents anyone, even law enforcement at international borders, from accessing your complete password vault. This mode lets you delete any sensitive data from your devices before you travel and then restore it with a click after you’ve crossed a border. If you frequently travel across national borders, you’ll appreciate my favorite 1Password feature: Travel Mode. The company also recently reduced its free-trial period from 30 days to 14 days. The problems so far are not enough to make me change our top pick, but it’s definitely something I am keeping an eye on. But on MacOS Monterey, I’ve had problems with autofill not working and keyboard shortcuts stopping until I relaunch the browser, among other issues. On the one hand, it finally works with Windows laptops running on ARM architecture. Most of them are slowly rolling out support for Passkey logins anyway, so it's not like you'll be behind the curve just because you didn't jump on the first Passkey opportunity that passed by.ġPassword recently announced a new version of its app, 1Password 8, and I’ve had a mixed experience with it. In the meantime, if you're savvy enough to be reading this article, we suggest you stick with a good password manager. We're hoping to see FIDO expand its current plan to allow third parties to generate and manage keys as well. That is a single point of failure, which, historically in the tech world, does not bode well. Passkeys are managed by your device, which means the tech company behind your device–namely Apple, Google, and Microsoft. The biggest is that you are going to be putting all your eggs in a single basket, as it were. That said, there are some significant downsides to what the FIDO Alliance has come up with so far. If millions of people suddenly stop using 12345678 as a password, that's a win for security. ![]() While passkeys aren't a radical departure, they're still an improvement by virtue of being pre-installed for people who aren't going to read this article and immediately sign up to use one of the services below. Your device compares that to the private key it has and you're signed in (or not if the keys don't match). If you are familiar with GPG keys, they're somewhat similar in that there's a public and private key the website you want to log in to has a public key and sends it to your device. Since Passkeys are generated key pairs instead of passwords, there's nothing to remember. Passkeys will eventually also function with systems by Microsoft, Meta, and Amazon. Google has already rolled out Passkey support in Android and Chrome. Websites and services need to support the FIDO Alliance’s protocols, which, at the moment, most don’t. Passkeys have been available since iOS 16 and MacOS Ventura, but there are some limitations. Apple will store them in iCloud’s Keychain so they’re synced across devices, and they work in Apple’s Safari web browser. Passkeys are generated cryptographic keys managed by your device. It’s still early days, but Apple has implemented the FIDO protocols in what the company calls passkeys. The latest effort to eliminate the password comes from the FIDO Alliance, an industry group aimed at standardizing authentication methods online. Passwords are a pain-you’ll get no argument here-but we don’t see them going away in the foreseeable future. Passkeys, FIDO, and the “Death of the Password”Ī concerted effort to get rid of passwords began roughly two days after the password was invented. Read our guide to VPN providers for more ideas on how you can upgrade your security, as well as our guide to backing up your data to make sure you don’t lose anything if the unexpected happens. We need to offload that work to password managers, which offer secure vaults that can stand in for our memory.Ī password manager offers convenience and, more importantly, helps you create better passwords, which makes your online existence less vulnerable to password-based attacks. That might work for Memory Grand Master Ed Cooke, but most of us are not capable of such fantastic feats. (Make sure they are long, strong, and secure!) Just kidding. The safest (if craziest) way to store your passwords is to memorize them all. The problem is, most of us don’t know what makes a good password and aren’t able to remember hundreds of them anyway. For nearly a decade, that’s been “123456” and “password”-the two most commonly used passwords on the web. We know they’re good for us, but most of us are happier snacking on the password equivalent of junk food. Password managers are the vegetables of the internet. ![]() 8/1/2023 0 Comments Backblaze storage pod![]() In this case, I will be downloading from my bucket, but you can upload from your pod as well. Choose the Backblaze B2 option for this tutorial. You will then be presented with several integration options. Here, you will want to click on the running Pod that you want to sync, and then choose the "Cloud Sync" button. Next, you'll need to go to your "My Pods" dashboard in RunPod. Copy these down, as you'll need them in the next step. You'll then be given a key ID and an application key. Give it a name and select the 'Read/Write' capability. To do this, go to the 'Account' tab and click on 'App Keys'. This will be used by RunPod to authenticate with Backblaze B2. Once your bucket has been created, you'll need to generate an account key. Click on 'Create a Bucket', give it a name, and select the location for your data. You can do this by logging into your Backblze account and going to the 'Buckets' tab. In this blog post, I'll go through the simple steps to achieve a cloud backup using the Backblaze B2 cloud storage service, as it is very affordable and easy to use.įirst, you'll need to create a bucket in Backblaze B2. RunPod Cloud Sync offers several integrations with cloud storage providers like AWS S3, Google Cloud Buckets, and Azure Blob Storage. “The question we had was ‘how can we democratize that Dropbox effect?’ The answer was clear – directly connecting with Backblaze’s B2 Cloud Storage offering. While RunPod offers persistent volume storage for your pods, we understand that many users would like to have a cloud backup in order to avoid idle storage charges or to be able to move their work to a new pod if the need arises. In our industry, it’s known as data gravity and Dropbox just saved $74 million by avoiding it with their move off of AWS,” said Jacob Smith, co-founder of Packet. “Many cloud users realize too late that traditional vendor pricing schemes are meant to lock in customer data. Likewise, Packet and ServerCentral argue that their services allow developers to use their services and save on their AWS bill. And, by charging $0.00 for transfers between Backblaze and our Compute Partners, customers choose what’s best for their particular workload.” ![]() Both providers offer world class compute offerings. “Our partnerships with Packet and ServerCentral now enable us to jointly support a variety of new uses and customers. ![]() “With over a decade of building the lowest-cost cloud storage, we’re proud to be able to profitably offer customers storage at one-fourth of the price of S3,” noted Gleb Budman, CEO of Backblaze. Packet offers a block storage service, too, but the use case for that is somewhat different from Backblaze’s storage service. Packet is mostly known for its bare-metal server offerings, while ServerCentral focuses on helping businesses manage their IT infrastructure. This matchup makes a lot of sense for the three independent cloud providers involved. But Backblaze is sweetening the deal today with a partnership with Packet and ServerCentral that will allow for free data transfer. With B2, however, the company also launched a file-centric cloud storage service for developers in 2015 that aims to challenge similar offerings from AWS and Azure on price.īecause Backblaze doesn’t offer any other cloud computing services, that was always a bit of a hard sell, as developers had to work with multiple vendors to write their apps and pay for the data transfer between B2 and their compute providers. Backblaze made its name as a cloud-based storage backup provider (and using lots of hard drives in the process) for individuals and businesses. ![]() 8/1/2023 0 Comments Julia whelan narrator![]() ![]() Toolkit Resources to use and post about AudiobookSYNC.Season Sync 2023 – 14 weeks of Free audiobooks.Community Collaboration with I'm Your Neighbor Books.Advertise Let us help you reach audiobook listeners.Contact For customer service or with your feedback.Who We love audiobooks!
